Licencié de Mathématiques en 1950. Licencié de Lettres en 1952. Licencié de Philosophie en 1953. Reçu au CAPES de Philosophie en 1955. D’origine gasconne, il est le fils de Jean, dit Valmy Serres, batelier sur la Garonne. Il reçoit une éducation catholique et pratique le scoutisme au sein des Scouts de France qui le totémisent « Renard enthousiaste » . Il est le père de quatre enfants , dont Jean-François Serres, un temps délégué général de l'association Petits Frères des pauvres .
