Knowles Consulting was founded in 1992 with the introduction of the Windows 3.1 beta program. Windows 3.1 was the first version of Windows to demonstrate the potential of efficient multi-tasking and true what you see is what you get (WYSIWYG) output. The beta program opened my eyes to the future of client-side operating systems and development of message driven applications.

Windows 3.1 was still not a complete 32-bit operating system so the Microsoft/IBM development of OS/2 2.0 offered promise and I pursued the beta offering searching for the holy grail of 32-bit computing. Unfortunately OS/2 2.0 failed to maintain the expected level of application compatibility that was expected. At this same time, Microsoft and IBM began to go their separate ways in development of 32-bit operating systems and the beta of Windows NT 3.0 was made available to a select group of people.

Luckily for me, I was offered to participate in the beta of Windows NT 3.0. That beta opened up an entire new vista of operating system performance, application compatibility, and most importantly stability. I was so enamored with Windows NT 3.0 that I spent an inordinate amount of time with the product and  the beta site boards on Compuserve learning about the product that I began to provide solutions to other members. I was providing such a significant amount of support that at the end of the beta the members of the beta support team requested an exception to the most valuable professional (MVP) program that was originally designated for developers only to award me with the MVP for the WINNT forum in late 1993.

The MVP award provided additional publicity as well as a free TechEd session in Florida. The exposure provided additional opportunities to lecture and write for various publications. Eventually I wrote entire books on Windows NT 4.0. During this time I continued to provide services for clients utilizing Windows NT Server,  various BackOffice products, Windows, and Office products. That practice continues today.
